Jane S. Fancher

Jane S. Fancher (24 October 1952 – ) is a science fiction and fantasy author and artist.

She currently lives in Spokane, Washington with fellow science fiction writer C. J. Cherryh. Fancher has published six science fiction and fantasy novels as well as two short stories.

In the early 1980s she worked for Warp Graphics as an art assistant on Elfquest, providing inking assistance on the black and white comics and coloring on Books 2 and 3 of the original graphic novel reprints. Subsequent reprint editions have omitted her name from the art credits, and later graphic novel editions have used different coloring.

She was also the creator of the graphic novel adaptation of C. J. Cherryh's Gate of Ivrel, the first novel in Cherryh's Morgaine series. This originally began as a self-published black & white comic book that only appeared for one issue (1985). Later Fancher expanded the material in color for professional publication as a series of graphic novels. The series includes Gate of Ivrel: No. 1 (the black & white version), plus the two color issues: Gate of Ivrel: Claiming Rites (1986) and Gate of Ivrel: Fever Dreams (1987). All three graphic novels were done in collaboration with C. J. Cherryh. Although the series was cut short halfway through the story, this led to a close friendship and professional collaboration, as well as Jane becoming an author herself.

Fancher's books include the "Groundties" series, as well as the "Dance of the Rings" trilogy: Ring of Lightning (1995); Ring of Intrigue (1997), and Ring of Destiny (1999). As of December 2005, the 4th book in the "Dance of the Rings" series is being written.

Also as of September 2005, the original "Groundties" trilogy (Groundties, Uplink, & Harmonies of the 'Net) has undergone a complete re-write by Fancher & been retitled the "'NetWalkers" series. A prequel has been added to the original trilogy. Publication date has not yet been announced.
