John Sununu: stupid surrogate tricks

I guess Mitt Romney is a little piss-poor when it comes to articulate, thoughtful campaign surrogates. He’s got Donald Trump blathering on about President Obama’s birth certificate and now he’s got John Sununu calling the President “stupid.”

Sununu really stepped in it again today. To be charitable, the worst of the quote was taken out of context:

“The men and women all over America who have worked hard to build these businesses, their businesses, from the ground up is how our economy became the envy of the world. It is the American way, and I wish this president would learn how to be an American.”

Oops. Queried on clarifying the “I wish this president would learn how to be American” quote, Sununu, stepping even deeper in it, replied, “What I thought I said but I guess I didn’t say is that the president has to learn the American formula for creating business. The American formula for creating business is not to have the government create business.”

Then, on CNN later today, Sununu said this: “”I made a mistake, I shouldn’t have used those words. I’m apologizing for those words, I shouldn’t have used them.” Yep, he apologized for the words, but not the meaning behind them. Sununu finished the interview with these gems, “the president has to stop denigrating American values” and “he’s sending the wrong message to the American people that if you’re rich, you’re somehow evil.”

No, John. Only rich people who put millions in offshore accounts and pay almost no taxes, making the middle class pick up the slack, they’re the evil ones.
